One of the best memories that I can recall from my childhood was
playing tennis with my brother. We would wake up really early every Saturday
morning and head down to our local courts. We would spend hours working on
drills, playing exhibition matches, and practicing our strokes. Once we found
ourselves familiar with the sport's subtle details, we began playing other
people on the courts.
Before we started practicing every Saturday, I would put on some scuffed up shoes that I have had for years. This affected my game tremendously because I was always slipping and sliding on the court. My brother suggested that I get some real tennis shoes. I didn't think anything of it because we were both pretty broke at the time. Well sure enough, the next morning I woke up and there they were: my first pair of junior tennis shoes. These junior tennis shoes were very stylish and I wanted to try them on instantly. They felt great as I paraded around, and I couldn't believe my brother scraped some money together to get me such an incredible gift.
The only thing I was missing was some junior tennis balls and some junior tennis racquets. I knew if I saved some money up I could indeed buy myself these gifts. Then I would be unstoppable on the court because I had put so much time and effort on my tennis game. About a month later I bought some new junior tennis racquets and junior tennis balls in order to help prepare me for my first tennis competition.
The competition was weeks away and my brother and I practiced like there was no tomorrow. The new shoes and racquets certainly gave me the confidence to compete at my highest level. We would wake up even earlier on Saturdays to get the competitive edge that we felt would be the difference. Sure enough, the competition arrived and I took first place. I was so proud of my accomplishments and the amount of work I put into training. It gave me a sense of self-worth and it all started with the new junior tennis shoes that my brother bought me.
